About Us

Tamil Nadu Jain Sangh Trust (TNJST) is an organisation with over four decades of service to the Jain community. The plan addresses two pivotal objectives: ensuring the accurate enumeration of Jains under "Code 6" in the upcoming 2026 Census and establishing the "Jain for Jains" initiative to foster comprehensive community development through Education, Employment, and Entrepreneurship (E.E.E.). Accurate representation in the census is essential for affirming the community’s distinct identity and securing the rightful recognition and benefits. Concurrently, the "Jain for Jains" initiative aims to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that empowers individuals and enhances the collective fabric of the community. This proposed website strategy functions as a centralised digital platform designed to facilitate outreach, provide educational resources, and promote community engagement, thereby ensuring the long-term recognition, welfare, and unity of the Jain community in Tamil Nadu.

Dual Strategic Imperatives for the Future

TNJST is presently focused on two critical initiatives designed to shape the future of the Jain community in Tamil Nadu:

6

1. Popularising "Code 6" for the 2026 Census

This initiative is a proactive and essential effort to ensure that Jains are accurately identified as a distinct religious group during the upcoming national census enumeration. Accurate data is fundamental for community recognition and the allocation of resources.

2. Launching "Jain for Jains"

This represents a long-term, visionary initiative aimed at creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. Its core objective is to uplift and unite the community by focusing on three interconnected pillars: Education, Employment, and Entrepreneurship (E.E.E.).

These objectives are crucial for protecting the community's unique identity, supporting its socio-economic growth, and increasing its collective strength and visibility within the wider Indian society.

Census 2026: Mark Your Identity as Jain (Code 6)

The Historical Significance of Jainism in Tamil Nadu

Jainism has a profound and venerable history within Tamil Nadu. Early Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions, dating back to the 3rd century BCE, provide comprehensive accounts of the livelihoods of Tamil Jains. Historically, Jainism was the oldest religion in the region, receiving considerable royal patronage from influential dynasties such as the Kalabhras (3rd–7th century CE), the Pallavas, and the Pandyans.

This patronage facilitated the construction of numerous significant temples and cave complexes, including the acclaimed Sittanavasal Cave and the Tirumalai cave complex. Despite a period of decline from the 8th century CE, Jainism endured in the region and continued to contribute profoundly to Tamil literature, with notable texts such as Cīvaka Cintāmaṇi and Nālaṭiyār credited to Digambara Jain authors.

Legal Recognition and Census Status

Important Facts:

Why Code 6 Matters

Accurate enumeration of the Jain population is paramount. It ensures that actual numbers are precisely reflected in national demographic data, which is fundamental for:

Despite having national minority status, Jains constitute a tiny percentage of India's total population (0.4% in 2011) and an even smaller minority in Tamil Nadu (0.12% in 2011, approximately 89,265 individuals). This demographic reality makes accurate self-identification critically essential to prevent underrepresentation.

Simple Steps for Census Enumeration

How to Mark Your Identity:

  1. When asked about your religion, clearly state "Jain"
  2. If a numerical code is requested, remember "Code 6"
  3. Verify your entry with the enumerator to ensure accuracy
  4. If the enumerator doesn't know Code 6, politely insist on "Jain" and "Code 6" and refer to official census guidelines

Remember: Each individual's accurate response directly contributes to the community's overall strength, visibility, and recognition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jainism a separate religion?

Yes, Jainism is legally distinct from Hinduism, as explicitly affirmed by the Supreme Court in 2006 and recognized as a national minority by the Government of India in 2014.

What is the history of Jain census codes?

Jainism has been designated with "Code 6" since the 2001 Census, marking the first instance when explicit numerical codes were assigned to various religions. Historical census instructions also consistently employed "J" as an abbreviation for Jainism.

Why is my individual response important?

Your accurate response contributes to collective recognition and benefits for the entire Jain community. Under-enumeration could diminish the community's perceived size and consequently reduce eligibility for minority-specific benefits, educational grants, and political representation.

What if the enumerator doesn't know Code 6?

Politely insist on marking "Jain" and "Code 6" and refer to official census guidelines. You have the right to ensure your religion is recorded accurately.
